"In Their Charge"

Watching small people
as they passed by
cherubim faces
holding wide eyes,
she recalled. . .

Being a child
looking up
in awed wonderment
At the big people
in her life
those with whom
all time was spent

Thinking,
they had always been
big and large
while she was
and always would be
a child
in their charge

She would marvel at
the many things they could do
It felt safe
to be in their presence
Time with them produced for her
a feeling somewhat like heaven

About grade three
realizing people grow
and change
It was then she grasped
the concept of age,
and the relations
of her relatives

Seeing small eyes
when they pass by,
as they look up and ponder
the big people
of their charge

Some show love
Some show fear
None show hate. . .

At the end
we wonder
Where could we have done more?
and why didn’t we?

With so much energy used
pursuing self
as if that truly mattered

The macro of I am
which dominated the landscape
from horizon to horizon
is marginalized to a micro of mass
on the verge of imploding
into the nothingness of a cosmic spark

Each leaves an imprint.
For whom and to what degree
it touches
or changes
the future,
is never known

Being no more than a mosaic speck
in the evolutionary tapestry,
designed and planned
to bring each life once again
back to its creator

A little pain
not too much

Permanent stain
you can touch

It won’t rub off
with wash or scrub
Takes a laser beam to remove
the indelible longevity
of a momentary escape
to mental levity

Once as lonely
and unique
as a long haired Bob Seger
with his Silver Bullet Band
traveling on the roads
across C & W land

As they bad mouthed
ridiculed and glibly harassed
his hair length and style
Now to find one shorn
Nashville music man
you’d need to search
a country mile

Same with all
those ink tattoos
Once unique
on relative few
Now there are multiples
of colors, shapes
and designs
found on every one or two
